Tips for Television Placement in Your Home
Most homes in America have a TV in almost every room of the house, and the TV is the focal point in many rooms. We love our TVs and refuse apologize for them—bigger is better. Finding a good spot for your TV involves some subtleties—here are five tips for television placement in your home.
Find a Good Power Source
You’ll need to power your TV, of course, so the first thing you need to do is find an available outlet in the room. Find a spot with available power as well as the space to accommodate the TV. You may want to add an adaptor or power strip to the outlet—you probably have a DVD player, stereo, house hubs, or other ancillary technology that will need juice, too.
Face the TV Away from Windows
If you can avoid it, don’t place the TV opposite a window. During the day, you won’t be able to see the picture clearly. Even an LED screen will struggle in the face of the sun. If you have no other option, black out the window or put up some heavy-duty curtains or blinds.
Conceal It
Not everyone wants their TVs to be the center of attention in their homes. Rather than prominently displaying it on the wall and facing all their furniture toward it, they want their TVs to blend into the room. If you want to hide your TV or be able to conceal it in an instant, then find a cabinet or armoire for the TV. Just make sure it has holes in the back for the cables.
To Mantel or Not
A lot of people opt to put their televisions above a mantel over the fireplace—it’s quite the trend right now. The problem with this is that the TV is very high up, and viewing it may be uncomfortable. The general rule is to hang a television no more than four feet off the ground so that everyone can watch in comfort without having to crane their necks.
